Tweeties, Wendy's and Hugh Jackman's bod!

Last night Nat, Jess, Sean and I went up to Aucks to do Rialto proud in the Skycity Tweeties pub quiz night.
We ended up coming a respectable 7th out of 13. So, right in the middle. At least we weren't last, right?!
Congrats to Chartwell and Centreplace who got 2nd and 3rd....although we should point out that the star players from each were originally Rialtrons, so i think we can pinch a bit of credit there too!
Was dissapointed by the lack of classic film q's, but I did earn my keep by answering:

And, who holds the record for most Oscar WINS?

Any ideas?

Anyway, we all got prizes which was pretty cool. Nat and I were stoked to still find copies of the Scoop dvd left on the table when it was our turn to go up. Mmmmmmmm....Hugh Jackman in swimming trunks.......
I find it amusing that people seem to forget what a weirdo I am when they are drunk; I actually like my Celtic Woman cd, thank you very much!

A quick stop at Wendy's Wendy's YUM! for dinner, then back to the Tron.

I think living alone and having no one to call when things go bump in the night has toughened me up a bit.
We got to Taupiri mountain with the freaky cemetary lights that look like eyes and Nat decided to tell me about the freaky ghost sighting up in proj yesterday. Someone walked past the camera when there was no one up there.
Great. Am proj/management tomorrow night.
But once I would have been freaking out when I got home late at night, with a scary ghost story ringing in my ears, but last night I was serenely calm and hopped into bed and turned out the light, no problem.
I also watched a really stupid werewolf movie late the other night and didn't get scared, when normally I get scared of anything with the slightest hint of something sinister.
Am quite proud of myself really.

And in a completely unrelated rant.....men suck.

Final post for the day. And a very sad one too.

Got to work yesterday and while waiting for the useless plumber to arrive - finally got there an hour late and ending up leaving after turning all our water off!!!! - I had a look at the news online and was saddened to read that yet another Hollywood star is now shining in the heavens.
Deborah Kerr passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86.
Now, most of you, like my mother - who should know better! - will be saying, "Who?"
She is, after Audrey, the actress and woman I most aspire to be like.
A very refined, beautiful and dignified Scottish actress and several time co star of my beloved Cary.

Her most famous films are:

and the orginal Casino Royale, where she played a Bond girl at age 46.

But most of you will know her from her role in From Here To Eternity, which even if you haven't seen it, you should be familiar with the scene on the beach where she and Burt Lancaster are having a smooch on the sand when a big wave comes up and washes over them.


Ahhhhh! I hear you all say.

Anyway, she was a truly great lady and such a beautiful actress to watch on screen. I plan to have a movie marathon this weekend, so if you want some edumacating, you are more than welcome to join me!

I read a couple of quotes in the news about AATR, and I see Jenni has them on her blog too, which I just have to put down here:

"Believe me, Cary (Grant) and I knew how to kiss. When we did a love scene, we may not have been trying to swallow each other but, for those brief moments, we just loved each other."

It's true too. The movies they starred in together were pure magic with their chemistry and they didn't need to overdo any of the romance to make the audience melt.

"I think I understand what women see in the movie. There is a sweetness that is appealing and far removed from today's crudities. It makes them realize that the world has lost something delightful."

This one was in reference to Sleepless In Seattle, when the women are all blubbering just talking about the movie, and the men just don't get it!

I was also very touched when my friend Emma (also an AATR and King And I fan) came up and gave me a hug last night saying, "I heard Deborah Kerr died. Are you ok?" lol.

So, Happy Thoughts Debbie, and give Cary a kiss for me. I will wear you both proudly!

Random tidbits

I am being ignored by someone I like very much at the moment. Not much fun. Quite upsetting actually. Ah well, c'est la vie...etc.

I have signed up for a four week face painting class!
I am wanting to add as much cool stuff to my fairy parties as possible and have been looking for a face painting teacher for awhile, and then I find Fairfield College has a night class going. $30 for 4 lessons. Not bad at all.
Am still on the hunt for some easy fairy themed magic tricks, so if you happen across any....
Also if anyone knows how to make balloon petals. I can do a very nice stem with leaves and flower centre, but the petals are proving too much!

I am also having a big fight with my computer as I try to create some stunning invitations to my 22.5th birthday party! So, don't be sad you haven't got one yet...no one has! My floor however is covered in glitter from several failed trial runs. Unlike my Mum though, I think it looks pretty!

And I am still going through my baking fix, so let me know if you need any homemade treats!
So far, I have perfected, chocolate cupcakes, banana cake, cookies and pancakes with bacon and banana mmmmm. Scones are proving rather difficult though.

Reviews

I've been bad and still haven't seen a few of the Rialto films I want to see, instead going to see a couple at Chartwell - I'm sorry, but the lure of free parking is too much!

The Nanny Diaries was nothing spectacular, a good piece of fluff for a lazy day, which increased my desire not to be rich, and my loathing of people who have children and don't want to look after them. What is the point?

Stardust - Now I'm not the biggest fantasy fan, but I like witches and stars so this film looked like it could appeal, and I did enjoy it, but maybe not enough to buy the dvd...... Michelle Pfeiffer is doing some great stuff lately. Loved her in Hairspray and in this one.

And a play review.

Went to see Playbox's Off The Hook last night. By myself. Sniff sniff.

And I have to admit, the most amusing part was the awful acting. Not all of the cast....but most. Lovely apple crumble afterwards though!

Am not a fan of Derek Benfield's writing either. The Ray Cooney farce I was in last year (Out of Order) was just hysterical the entire way through, with natural sounding jokes. Benfield's plays are not that funny and the jokes are there just to be there, if you know what I mean. Nat, you will - he also wrote that last play we went to see.

Now I love my Riverlea Theatre and the members of it, but why oh why is the acting THAT bad?!

Hmm...my reviews seem to get shorter and lazier each time....sorry!

PUTTING SEXY BACK: The National Council of Women of New Zealand is asking parents not to sex-up their kids when it comes to shopping for clothes.

With Labour weekend sales and Christmas looming, parents are being asked not to sex-up their kids.
The National Council of Women of New Zealand has raised concerns over the "sexualisation" of children through clothes, toys and marketing.
National president Christine Low said the trend of sexualisation was harmful to the mental and physical development of children. "There is growing evidence of children having poor body image and low self-esteem.
"Children, especially young girls, are now being bombarded and encouraged by magazines, television, the internet and music videos to imitate the look of celebrities."
Parents shouldn't be worried about being called "anti-fun", she said.

Thank God.
I have always hated the way little girls have been tarted up to look like minature slappers, and don't even start me on those Bratz dolls.
Whatever happened to cute gingham pinafore dresses and ragdolls?
All I can say is, I need to learn how to sew so that I can one day make my daughter clothes fit for being seen in public!

So, I have officially had my restricted license for FIVE YEARS!!!!

About time I got my full, huh?

I have no doubt that I can easily pass, but oh, the money. Why is everything so damned expensive? Sat down in front of my online banking page this morning, and voooosh! my pay is nearly completely gone.

How I hate money. But I am determined to start saving up some of my pay each week so that I can make it to Caryvention 9 next year.

The Warbrides went on 'A Cruise To Remember' around Mexico last weekend am I am so gutted to have missed out. I did win an awesome Caryvention tshirt in the trivia comp though! Thanks so much again, Jan!

(You see, there is a whole group of women scattered around the world as obsessed - and some even more so - with Cary as I am)!

Anyway, I saw La Vie En Rose last night.

Rialtonians will know how enraged I was when I saw we weren't getting it with the film festival, so have been waiting not so patiently for it to come out on general release, and I certainly was not disappointed.

I did discover though, that I will never be a truly great actress.

Marion Cotillard is a GENIUS!

I have been trying to think of an actor from any era of film history who has given such an intense, passionate and truly moving and believable performance as Cotillard's Piaf...and I can't.

This woman, I will quite plainly state, is the greatest film actress to ever appear on celluloid.

I could never give a performance even as half as good as hers.

If she's not up for an Oscar, something is terribly wrong. The statue should already be in her hands.

It's one thing for an actor to create a character and give an amazing performance, but to take a well known figure from history, of whom there are many video clips and images around, and nail the person to a tee, is nothing short of genius.

She played Edith to perfection from her early twenties right through to her death in her 40s, where she looked more like a 90 year old thanks to the toll various addictions and heartbreaks had on her.

By now, you will have guessed that I absolutely loved this film and can't rave about it enough, so I won't.

Just go and see it! And then borrow my Edith Piaf cds!

'La Vie En Rose' is in my list of top five favourite songs ever - the French version, not so much the prettied up English lyrics - and have decided that when I kick the bucket I want 'Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien' played at my funeral, as well as Frank Sinatra's 'My Way'.

God, I'm old! lol
