The Quest

Yay! So the new Wilbur Smith book has been released and I used my tap class fees to buy it yesterday. Oops!
Now, you may be thinking that I'm not the kinda girl who would read Wilbur Smith, right? Margaret Mitchell, definately; Philippa Gregory, of course; Charlotte Bingham, yes, I'll admit it; but Wilbur Smith!? Well, little known fact about moi; I am in fact quite the amateur Egyptologist! (Go figure!) But much like Evie in The Mummy, I have dreamed of discovering a sarchophagus since I was a little girl. What can I say, I'm a very complex person!
In fact, to quote my cousin after we first saw The Mummy, "Oh my God! You ARE Evie!" Which I'm afraid is rather true...except for the fact that I'm nowhere near as gorgeous as Rachel Weisz. Sigh.

It's actually quite disturbing the number of tv shows and movies I turn up in. I was persuaded by the ex to watch season two of Blackadder because I 'featured' in it - Queenie anyone? "Sometimes I think about having your head cut off just to see the look on your face!"

Anyway, the previous ex got me reading River God which I absolutely loved, so have collected all of Smith's Egypt books, the latest being The Quest. I started it last night, but stopped when I got up to the part where eyeballs are being removed with bamboo needles. Yeah. I skipped that bit.
So, I have promised myself that after I go give my house a good....or at least an OK clean, I can curl up on the couch and go back in time a few thousand years.
Bugger. That means putting away the laundry. My most loathed upon of all household chores.

Bring on the booze!

I now hold a General Managers' Cert.
Yay me! :)

Goodbye summer

What a yuk day :(
Well it's my day off, so I could either clean the house - which is probably what I should do - or I can go back to bed and watch I Love Lucy.
I love 1950s tv. Most people today would think it's just silly, but Lucy has me in hysterics all the time. What a great comedienne, with amazing comic timing. Vitameatavegemin anyone? And of course her hair - the inspiration for me going red, if you didn't already know that!
Anyway, I Love Lucy it is I think. At least until 3pm when I have my interview for my General Managers' Cert. Wish me luck!

I'm bored, so it's random quiz time!

You Are Lacy Panties

You're one seductive chica, but you've also got a ton of class.
You are like a pinup girl, with timeless beauty and sexiness.
Men are afraid to talk to you, knowing they'll be addicted to your charm immediately.
Only a true manly man, confident in himself, is your perfect match.

You Are Medium Maintenance

You aren't as hard to deal with as some girls
But you aren't the most laid back chick either
You're easy to deal with 90% of the time, but watch out for that 10%!
If the guy you are with has good intentions, then calm down a little
But if he's really screwing up, don't waste your breath - move on :-)

You Are Most Like Charlotte!

You are the ultimate romantic idealist
You've been hurt before, but that hasn't caused you to give up on love.
If anything, your resolve to fall in love is stronger than ever.
And it's this feminine optimism that men find most appealing about you.

Romantic prediction: That guy you are seeing (or crushing on)?

Could be very serious - if you play your cards right!

You are a Great Girlfriend

When it comes to your guy, you're very thoughtful
But you also haven't stopped thinking of yourself
You're the perfect blend of independent and caring
You're a total catch - make sure your guy knows it too!

Guys Think You're Easy to Be With... But Not Easy

You're definitely a flirt - and a good one.
But you also know that you shouldn't make a move on any cute guy who passes by.
You save your seductive moves for someone who already knows the real you.
That way, your sex appeal is just part of the whole package.
Probably more info than you needed to know! But looking at the answers I got, why the hell am I still single! I'm a great catch!!!!
Maybe I definately need to go to Italy:

You Should Date An Italian!

You love for old fashioned romance, with an old fashioned guy
An Italian guy is the perfect candidate to be your prince charming
If your head doesn't spin enough, just down another espresso with him
Invest in a motorcycle helmet - and some carb blocker for all that pasta!

The Friday Five

1. If you could suddenly speak one language fluently (that you don't currently speak) what would it be?
Fluent Italian to go with my abysmal French. Am working on it slowly.

2. If you were to suggest a foreign film, that you really enjoyed, what one would you suggest?
Amelie! One of my fav movies ever!

3. If you had to call another country home (other than the one you currently live in) what one would you choose?
Italy. I want to live in Venice, summer in Rome and retire in Tuscany. I have it all figured out!

4. If you went out to buy an import music CD, what one would you buy?
Umm...tricky....I guess Italy again, for great opera by Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo etc.

5. If you were to chose an ethnic dinner, what would it be?
Italian! Betcha couldn't guess that!

Ahh Italia. Beautiful food, beautiful theatre, beautiful art, beautiful architecture, beautiful opera, beautiful gelato, beautiful men ;)
Am trying to save to go over there for a two month trip to see all the things I've studied in art history for years and to buy some real Venetian masks to go with the Warehouse ones currently adorning my bedroom wall, as well as see some real Commedia dell'Arte, so Mrs Ryan can invite me back to SHGC to teach it to her drama classes, and I may actually know what I'm doing, rather than teaching it fourth hand!
And if I happened to meet an handsome Italian man....or Gregory Peck I wouldn't complain either!
But anyone who knows me, knows I am useless when it comes to saving, so it may be a few decades before I actually get over there :(

Cranky miserable cow.

Me that is. I HATE being sick! Grrrrr!

Who needs doctors when there are musicals?!

Ok, so to the average, untrained person...or person with a PHD, it would appear that I simply am suffering of a common cold.
But, to those people familiar firstly with myself, and secondly with the world of musicals, I am indeed suffering from "Adelaide's Lament". Vivian Blaine pointed this out to me when I was lying in bed watching Guys And Dolls this morning.
For those of you with no clue what I'm on about, I'll show you......through song!

"It says here:
The average unmarried female
Basically insecure
Due to some long frustration may react
With psychosomatic symptoms
Difficult to endure
Affecting the upper resperatory tract.
In other words,
just from waiting around for that plain little band of gold
A person can develop a cold.

You can spray her wherever you figure
there's streptococci lurk
You can give her a shot for whatever's she's got,
but it just won't work
If she's tired of getting the fish eye
from the hotel clerk
A person can develop a cold.

It says here:
The female remaining single
Just in the legal sense
Shows a neurotic tendancy,
see note:
Chronic organic symptoms
Toxic or hypertense
Involving the eye, the ear, the nose, and throat.
In other words,
just from worrying if the wedding is on or off
A person can develop a cough.
You can feed her all day
with the vitamin A and the bromofizz
But the medicine never gets
anywhere near where the trouble is.
If she's getting a kind of name for herself,
and the name ain't his
A person can develop a cough.

And furthur more,
just from stalling, and stalling,
And stalling the wedding trip
A person can develop la grippe.

When they get on that train to Niagara
And she can hear church bells chime
The compartment is air conditioned
And the mood sublime
Then they get off at Saratoga for the fourteenth time!
A person can develop la grippe,
La grippe.
La post nasal drip.
With the wheezes
And the sneezes
And a sinus that's really a pip!
From a lack of community property
And a feeling she's getting to old
A person can develop a bad, bad cold!"

(ADELAIDE sneezes)

Movies movies movies

Right, chickens, time for some movie reviews methinks!

First up The Science of Sleep. Now a lot of people who read this are very arty people so chances are you will love this film. Me however....well I found it just a little too off the wall for my taste, and I didn't really click with any of the characters. It did have a certain charm about it though and like I said, I think most of my friends out there in blogland would love it.

Another take it or leave it film was Wild Hogs. I saw this last night after work because I couldn't really be bothered going home and I had been told it was very funny. And John Travolta's in it. However, he is certainly no Danny Zukko anymore, which I was disappointed to find out.

Now onto the piece de resistance; Miss Potter. I have been waiting for this film to come out for ages, because I, like most other people my generation and older, grew up reading and being read The Tales Of Beatrix Potter. Am I really the only one who had a fluffy Peter Rabbit jersey that my mummy knit for me? I think not. Jemima Puddleduck was my alltime favourite though.
Anyway, back to the film. To pinch I line from Emily Watson's character, "I found it utterly charming". I am definately going to take my mum to see this one. Partly because she'll love it, partly because I'm keen to see it again. It was touching and funny and very very sweet and most importantly not Hollywoodised at all...except maybe for the kiss on the train platform in the steam. I let that pass because that's on my list of Hollywood moments I wish to recreate one day!
Renee Zellweger however annoys me a great deal. And mwahahaha! I caught her 'acting' in the film a couple of times. Tut tut. Emily Watson on the other hand I love and I would have been much happier with her as Beatrix. But Renee was also an executive producer, so no chance of that happening.
The girl who played young Beatrix deserves a special mention too, because i thought she was extremely good. Very sweet.
Oh yes, and Ewan McGregor. Well I wouldn't kick him outta bed!

So, now I just have to see The Good German, tomorrow perhaps and I'll be all caught up! Well at least until Thursday when a new lot of films comes out!

Met a seemingly nice fella yesterday who thinks I'm rather hot. Grin. Maybe it's just male actors I hate.

This also tickled my funny bone:

What do you call a woman with 25 pairs of shoes?
Deprived!

And Happy St Paddy's day!

"I'm ashamed that women are so simple..."

In the fact that we...0r maybe just I, keep falling for stinkers of men!

I was watching Kiss Me Kate last night, and oh how things have changed. I no longer consider myself like Bianca:

"I'm a maid who would marry
And will take with no qualm
Any Tom, Dick or Harry,
Any Harry, Dick or Tom,
I'm a maid mad to marry
And will take double-quick
Any Tom, Dick or Harry,
Any Tom, Harry or Dick.
I'm a maid who would marry
And would no longer tarry,
I'm a maid who would marry,
May my hopes not miscarry!
I'm a maid mad to marry
And will take double-quick
Any Tom, Dick or Harry,
Any Tom, Harry or Dick."

But more like a Katherine:

"I hate men.
I can't abide 'em even now and then.
Than ever marry one of them, I'd rest a maiden rather,
For husbands are a boring lot and only give you bother.
Of course, I'm awfully glad that Mother had to marry Father,
But I hate men.
Of all the types I've ever met within our democracy,
I hate most the athlete with his manner bold and brassy,
He may have hair upon his chest but, sister, so has Lassie.
Oh, I hate men!
I hate men.
They should be kept like piggies in a pen.
Avoid the trav'ling salesman though a tempting Tom he may be,
For on your wedding night he may be off to far Araby,
While he's away in Mandalay is thee who have the baby,
Oh I hate men.
If thou shouldst wed a businessman, be wary, oh, be wary.
He'll tell you he's detained in town on business necessary,
His bus'ness is the bus'ness with his pretty secretary,
Oh I hate men!
I hate men
Though roosters they,
I will not play the hen.
If you espouse and older man through girlish optimism,
He'll always stay at home at night and make no criticism,
Though you may call it love, the doctors call it rheumatism.
Oh, I hate men.
From all I've read, alone in bed, from A to Zed, about 'em.
Since love is blind, then from the mind, all womankind should rout 'em,
But, ladies, you must answer too, what would we do without 'em?
Still, I hate men!"

News headlines that caught my attention

A stunned police officer listened in disbelief as a distraught Napier woman called to request police help in investigating a burglary.
The 45-year-old woman rang police yesterday morning to report the overnight theft of three cannabis plants she had been growing at her home.
The woman became so upset during the call she broke down in tears.
Senior Sergeant Mal Lochrie said the police communications officer who took the call found it difficult to stop smiling as the women gave details of the theft over the phone.
"I have had three marijuana plants stolen. They were in buckets," the woman told the officer.
She also bemoaned the fact it was the fourth year in a row someone had sneaked on to her Ahuriri property at night to steal cannabis plants from her shed.
"I am a good person. I am sick of these low-lifes stealing my things," she told the communications officer.
A community constable visited the woman at her home to take details of the burglary and warned her of the possible legal consequences of her continuing her green-thumbed gardening habits.

Heidi the cat's 15-year-old motor is purring again after a Melbourne surgeon fitted her with what is believed to be the state's first feline pacemaker.
When the elderly moggie began experiencing fainting spells her owners took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with arrhythmia – a condition in which the heart stops beating for short periods of time.
University of Melbourne doctors fitted a tiny pacemaker into the stricken pussycat, lodging the unit in her stomach muscles with electrical wires leading into the heart.
While dogs have benefited from pacemakers for more than 15 years now, fitting the life-saving device is still a rare operation for cats, especially in Australia.
A healthy Heidi, along with her relieved owners and proud doctors, are due to attend a media conference today.

In the odd animals hall of fame, this little piggy takes the cake.
Pigs are a sign of fertility in China, and in the Year of the Pig, this piglet got more than his fair share, being born with two mouths, two noses and three eyes.
Liu Shuping, a farmer specialising in raising pigs, presented the new-born piglet in Xi an, in north-west China's Shannxi province yesterday.
But it's not unique. Only last month there were reports of a pig being born in Quanzhou in East China's Fujian province with two mouths and four eyes.

Just a freak of nature? Or man stuffing up the environment? Hmmm.....

Movie Review

Saw The History Boys last night. It's based on a play by Alan Bennett, and is a pretty good British comedy. I think however it's one of those shows which works better onstage; it was not as bad as Dreamgirls mind!
The rest of the audience enjoyed it too and there were plenty of laughs. Having seen a behind the scenes thing on tv a few months ago, it still wasn't quite what I was expecting, but the characters were all loveable and there were laughs aplenty.
My favourite line: "What is history? History is women following behind.....with buckets!"
Possibly a great play, but not really great cinema, it's still a good way to pass what would be a lonely evening at home by one's self.

Supermarkets

I hate supermarket shopping. I'd rather spend my money on pretty shoes than boring things that I actually need to survive. But I hate supermarket shopping during the day more than anything. I was a lazybum yesterday so I went to Pak'n'Save after work today. Big mistake. Every man, his wife, their dog and 10 kamikaze kids were there. Not fun. This, dear reader, is why I prefer to shop at Countdown at 1am. Still not a lot of fun, but easier on the stress levels.
I did however pick up two beautiful bunches of roses for only $5 each. I can't decide if this makes me a modern woman, or sad and pathetic. But hey, no one else ever buys me flowers, and I really, really like having a pretty vase of flowers in my kitchen!
The girl at the checkout however was a complete moron and spent the whole time asking me why Rialto is such a "weird little cinema" and why we don't play "normal" films. Grrrr. Dumbass.

Tuesday, 6 March 2007

Well, there's a silver lining after all

Have lost 4kgs this week from having not much going into my body but plenty coming out! lol Yay!
Now, where are all my lovely visitors?

Monday, 5 March 2007

Oh woe is me :(

I am so over being sick, even if throwing up 3 times a day may mean I lose some weight as April .I. ingeniously pointed out!
Is anyone free tomorrow and keen to come over for a coffee? Have been through all my I Love Lucy dvds and quite a few Cary ones too. Mum's been so good though. Aren't mums the best?!
Am just hoping I'm better by tomorrow night before I go to the ballet - Tutus on Tour - yay! And there's a five year old little girl in our group, so she should be gorgeous to watch. I still remember my first ballet, Peter Pan. I was about 11 though, but so, so magical. And any excuse to get gussied up, right?! People don't get dressed up enough anymore. I said to my mum once that I'm trying to change that, one function at a time!

But yeah, visitors tomorrow and Wednesday would be muchly appreciated!!!

I saw Notes On A Scandal the other day. Brilliant. Except for the stupid cow in front of us who had her cellphone out during the film, and when I less than politely snapped at her (no sympathy for rude morons) turned around and said "It is off!" Yeah, that's why you keep pulling it out of your bag while it's all lit up like a friggin' Christmas tree! Grrrr!
Anyway, wow. Judi Dench just never ceases to please. And what a role! I would love a role like Barbara. My favourite part of drama class - other than performances - was delving into a script and doing a complete and thorough character analysis; and wow, Barbara would have been an amazing character to analyse.
Cate Blanchett I absolutely hate, but she's a tarty cow who played a tarty cow in the film, so I suppose it worked!
So, in conclusion, GO SEE IT! If there were runners up for Best Actress Oscars, it definately would have gone to Dame Judi. Brilliant. My modern day hero(ine); one of the few, if not the only, actors today who can draw crowds to a film just by being in it! Not something that has happened much since the 50s!

Thursday, 1 March 2007

Icky.

I hate that feeling you get when you wake up after an afternoon sleep. Yuk. But there's not much else to do when you're feeling sick. Medication is not supposed to make you sick! It's supposed to make you better! Grrr! I also fell asleep on the couch watching Rugrats, so am all stiff and sore as well :(
By the way, when did Chuckie's dad marry an Asian woman?!

Hehe! Thursday arvo funny

Courtesy of Bevan, cheers ears!

Proof of what can happen if a wife or girlfriend drags her husband or boyfriend along shopping... This letter was recently sent by Tesco's Head Office to a customer in Oxford:

Dear Mrs. Murray,

While we thank you for your valued custom and use of the Tesco Loyalty Card, the Manager of our store in Banbury is considering banning you and your family from shopping with us, unless your husband stops his antics.

Below is a list of offences over the past few months all verified by our surveillance cameras:

1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in people's trolleys when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: Made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to feminine products aisle.

4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official tone, "Code 3" in housewares... and watched what happened.

5. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

6. September 15: Set up a tent in the outdoor clothing department and told shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring sausages and a Calor gas stove.

7. September 23: When the Deputy Manager asked if she could help him, he began to cry and asked, "Why can't you people just leave me alone?"

8. October 4: Looked right into the security camera; used it as a mirror, picked his nose, and ate it.

9. November 10: While appearing to be choosing kitchen knives in the Housewares aisle asked an assistant if he knew where the antidepressants were.

10. December 3: Darted around the store suspiciously, loudly humming the "Mission Impossible" theme.

11. December 6: In the kitchenware aisle, practised the "Madonna look" using different size funnels.

12. December 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed, yelled "PICK ME!" "PICK ME!"

13. December 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, assumed the foetal position and screamed "NO! NO! It's those voices again."

And; last, but not least:

14. December 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited a while; then yelled, very loudly, "There is no toilet paper in here."

Yours sincerely,

Charles Brown
Store Manager
